Sherlock Holmes is consulted by the American heir to the Baskerville estate, which is shrouded in rumours of a demonic family curse only the master detective, Sherlock Holmes, can find out the truth.
The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the crime novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialised in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England’s West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case. This was the first appearance of Holmes since his apparent death in “The Final Problem”, and the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles led to the character’s eventual revival.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984–1985), The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1986–1988), The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1991–1993) and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994), collectively known as Sherlock Holmes, are a series of adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories which were produced by Granada Television and originally broadcast by ITV in the United Kingdom. The series starred Jeremy Brett as Holmes and David Burke (in the Adventures series) and Edward Hardwicke (Return, Case-Book, Memoirs) as Dr. Watson.
The programme adapted 42 of the original stories in 41 episodes, with 36 running for 50 minutes (in a one-hour timeslot), and five being feature-length specials. Adventures ran for two series totalling 13 episodes, from April to June 1984 and August to September 1985. Return ran for two series from July to August 1986 and April to August 1988, as well as the specials “The Sign of Four” and “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, which aired on 29 December 1987 and 31 August 1988 respectively. Case-Book ran for one series from February to March 1991 and three specials which aired on 2 January 1992 and 27 January and 3 February 1993. Memoirs ran for one series from March to April 1994.” From YouTube

I spent the day YouTubing the show. Watching episodes, especially from the last series, Memoirs, that I had not seen, or seen rarely.

The Granada TV Sherlock Holmes series is a such a well made production. I think so much love went into making it. I love trying to solve the mysteries. But now I think I know all of them.

The Granada series does pay such attention to detail — I find myself within Sherlock and Watson’s world instantly from the opening. You are right, I think a lot of love went into those productions. Before CGI and other effects made recreation of another time and space “easier” to manipulate.

Well, I think the set decoration and wardrobe make such a difference. I appreciate more than computer generated effects. And I don’t want to leave out the great actors. I miss them. I think Inspector Lestrade is still alive but all the others have passed.

Yes, Jeremy Brett died first in 1995, just after the series ended. David Burke, who played Watson for the first series is still alive.
I like sets and actors, especially for period pieces such as Sherlock Holmes. I am looking forward to more YouTubing of Holmes in the weeks to come.

I think Jeremy Brett died in his early sixties. I remember David Burke and Edward Hardwicke who replaced him as Dr. Watson. You have a lot to enjoy with the rest of the series. :)
