Odd this – now you have me thinking that “philosophy” and the study of this is most likely something of a dead branch. I mean, when was the last time you heard mention of someone quoting a philosopher or making a reference to a particular theme, idea etc.? Hmmm – this really has me wondering.
I suspect it’s now more about the “Prophet I” — and mass consumerism and the slavish indulgences and following of “influencers” —- ha! How sad.
Sorry, my brain is tripping up here. Wandering into a maze ….. but hmm, I can’t say I have a particular philosopher that I favour. Long ago I was into reading and exploring (at school) the “biggies” – you know, from the list …. so yeah, it was cool. Interesting. But right now, all these years later, can’t declare I fall in line with a specific one etc. I’d probably have to dig into again to see how much my understanding has changed and what I find holds truck with me now. Such is evolution.
But of course, Monty Python is definitely worth the high esteem for being a sensible course of study!

I posited the question not because the site I got the notion for philosphy day asked it. My neice is a philosophy professor — specializes in ethics, though we’ve never discussed that.
Me? I still struggle with the definition. Okay, easy to say “philosopher” looking backwards, but the more modern times? I never studied philosophy; my exposure is kinda electic and strange.
As you say, everyone is a philosopher/influencer but . . .
Have a fondness for Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar (Carthart and Klein); and the Trolley Problem (by them) is interesting. Kan’t say as I get most of the heavy stuff, but it does make for good quotes, by times.
In the 1980s or 1990s, a mall in Halifax had a resident philosopher. PHD without a tenure track job. Thought is was a fantastic idea.
But, I stray and digress. Hegel, I can’t Russel up an answer.

roflmao — love the word play! Hie – you’ve dug deep here ;)
I didn’t know of a niece who is a philosophy professor specializing in ethics. That’s interesting and cool.
(Also makes me wonder who is studying in this more old-fashioned/traditional vein?)
Seems to me there isn’t much “ethics” going on in this modern world, but then, perhaps it’s always been so. But then, there were “greats” who did influence way back in the day, and rulers and leaders often did look to them for, at the very least, opinions and perspectives.
*shrugging* – these be mad times and it’s all rather discouraging, so I’m just gonna let it slide, and like you, know my own truths – best path through the carp and crap, I guess.
