Know what’s truly scary? Although edible plant types number in the tens of thousands, only 9 crops make up two-thirds of the world’s food harvest: corn; potatoes; rice; sugar beets; sugar cane; soybeans; wheat; oil palms and cassavas. Even scarier: sources of sugars make up 1/3 of that 3rd!

Agricultural experts warn this lack of biodiversity in the food supply is a risk to food security – especially during these challenging and difficult times.

Today is the 75th anniversary of World Food Day. 2020’s theme: Grow. Nourish. Sustain. Together.

But this year’s World Food Day is no ordinary day.

It comes as the world continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic – a global scourge that has exposed the fragility of our agri-food systems; threatens to push millions more into hunger; has made many of us rekindle our appreciation for food security: what some take for granted and many go without; but has also provided an opportunity to transform an agri-food system that is out of balance. world food day 2020

 

As the World Food Organization (United Nations) suggests:

Everyone across our food sector plays an important role in ensuring nutritious food is available – but you can make a difference too! Consumers are more than just eaters; you also have the power to influence what is produced through healthy food choices, which in turn contributes to more sustainable food systems.
