(Neil Young, live, 1998)
After the Gold Rush
Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming
Sayin’ something about a queen
There were peasants singing and drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree
There was a fanfare blowing to the sun
There was floating on the breeze
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the twentieth century
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the twentieth century (original 1970s; now 21st century)
I was lying in a burned out basement
With the full moon in my eyes
I was hoping for replacement
When the sun burst through the sky
There was a band playing in my head
And I felt like I could cry (original: And I felt like getting high)
I was thinking about what a friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie
Thinking about what a friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie
I dreamed I saw the silver spaceships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun
There were children crying and colors flying
All around the chosen ones
All in a dream, all in a dream
The loading had begun
Flying Mother Nature’s silver seed
To a new home in the sun
Flying Mother Nature’s silver seed
To a new home (in the sun)

I have to say, I just have never liked Neil Young’s voice. At all. (same with Bob Dylan) – so immediately – huge turn-off – and I couldn’t care how amazing the lyrics. or the music. But I was able to listen to the Ladies’ version and it was really lovely. Oddly enough though, I can just barely listen to Young when he sings live – maybe it’s the “flawed beauty” that then works to for my ears – so with the organ? not so bad …. interesting song – has some very avant-garde and forward thinking ideas, but then, that doesn’t surprise me, given it’s Young.

Just finished listening to a 2000 VH1 documentary on C, S, N & Y (and various formations).
I saw one Neil Young concert. I asked my friend from those days about it. She can remember stuff I have no clue about anymore. I remember concerts from those days in fragments. Any way, Young was too stoned, he forgot the words to the songs, hated the acoustics and walked off stage before he had done half his gig.
I don’t find him as easy to listen to now. Funny, I hear my memory of his voice much “sweeter” than it was.
I find I am sometimes disappointed when I rehear something — not how the song plays out in my mind.
Or, pleasantly surprised by how much I still enjoy a performer.
Some folks have the same problem re vocals with Leonard Cohen — love his songs when someone else sings them.
I don’t remember Trio at all. Some years are so fuzzy, it’s like rediscovery every day! Wow, that happened. That event took place. They did this. To say nothing of what other folks remember about my life.

I nod my head in understanding — memory is selective, for most people — kind of like the first time you hear a concert – live – as opposed to a record (LOL, my we are dating ourselves) — it can be such a shock to the system to hear it all with all the glitches, missed notes, keys off … as opposed to the “polished” recordings ….
and yup, Cohen’s voice is “particular” — I never did much like his “younger” days, more of the in the middle years, with the throaty low rasping, and towards the end, a bit too raw — but then, he never was a singer – a poet, yes – but not a singer.

I agree. Was it LIghtfoot who wrote something like there’s the poem, and the poet, and then there’s the singing man?
Dating self, but love Lightfoot! Wore the grooves out of records. Now that’s a real carbon dating symbol!

LOL@carbon dating symbol!
I don’t know if it was Lightfoot who said something like you mention, but it is “sound truth” —
and yes, Lightfoot is definitely iconic Canadian :)

I don’t remember Trio, and not them doing the song. Yes, I was really moved by their version. And how relevant the song remains.
Makes me want to listen to more of the work that Dolly, Emmylou, and Linda did together.
